Rustic warmth with hidden high-tech... just what the doctor ordered!
To meet the demands of his growing practice, renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Philip Stone needed to add a large and inviting seminar area to his 200 year old office.
Dr. Stone believed his uniquely inviting yet professional location, complete with burning fireplace, provided a signature "warm welcome" that contributed to his huge success. (The building sits next to the house where Dr. Seuss wrote many of his famous books!) It was imperative that any building expansion would work in harmony with and enhance the design integrity of his clinic.
Aware of the changes that Barron & Jacobs had made to Mercy Hospital and other colleagues offices, Dr. Stone invited us over to discuss the project.
The existing structure posed many challenges, both structurally and architecturally. Difficulties included the tight space of the property, a need to aesthetically integrate handicapped accessibility, and "historic district" zoning restrictions, including original 200-year-old windows which would have to be duplicated in order to satisfy local Historic Society regulations.
Barron & Jacobs rose to the challenge by designing a new entranceway in the old waiting room space, and then designing a new addition to accommodate both the waiting room and seminar area. To maintain the original ambience and style, the new addition featured cathedral ceilings with exposed beams, western red cedar tongue and groove ceiling decking, hand crafted cottage-style windows, and a large, stone fireplace.
Using smart space-saving design, the elegantly rustic waiting room was built to convert effortlessly into a technologically-advanced seminar area. A custom projection system concealed above the fireplace is revealed and operated with remote-controlled convenience. Ample closet space provides needed storage for both visitor coats and seminar chairs.
Not a typical "medical office," the end result maintained the warm and inviting yet professional feel Dr. Stone insisted on. As he put it "it's just what the doctor ordered."
